Nyeri - A 27-year-old man was on Wednesday sentenced to two years imprisonment by a Nyeri court for breaking into his aunt’s house and stealing her household goods.
John Kaibere Mutathi appeared before Nyeri Resident Magistrate John Aringo charged with breaking into Margaret Nyokabi’s house in Ruiri Village, Kieni sub-County.
He allegedly committed the offence on May 17, where he stole goods worth KES 7 000 while her aunt attended a funeral in the same village.
Kaibere was also charged with breaking into Paul Kariuki Kiara’s house on the same day, where he stole foodstuffs worth KES 3 000. He faced alternative counts of being found in possession of the stolen goods.
Kaibere was later arrested on May 22 after he was found selling the stolen items, and was escorted to Nairutia Police Station.
In mitigation, Kaibere told the court that he had a wife and two children who depended on him and prayed for leniency.
The magistrate however said the evidence against him was overwhelming, and convicted him.
