Nyeri - A man claiming to be a secret lover of his boss was on Friday sentenced to 15 years in jail for stealing KES 358,000 from her.
Rhodes Kioko Mutinda worked as a supermarket supervisor and was convicted by Nyeri Senior Resident Magistrate, Joann Wambliyanga.
He had been charged with six counts of stealing from the Narumoru Popular Supermarket's Consolidated Bank account on diverse dates between May 2012 and January 2013.
His employer, Mary Nyaguthii Mbiga, told the court that she noticed the missing cheques used to transfer the money on February 6 while going through the business records.
Nyaguthii told the court that upon making the discovery, she called the Consolidated Bank and asked them who had withdrawn the money. The bank later gave her images of Kioko and then she reported the matter to police.
In his defence, Kioko alleged that Nyaguthii had been her secret lover and she had given him the money to advance his education.
He added that his employer became envious when she learnt that he had a girlfriend, allegations that Nyaguthii denied.
In mitigation, the convict reiterated that his employer was his secret lover and she deposited the money to his account.
However, while delivering the ruling, the magistrate noted that the case had been proven beyond reasonable doubt and that the defendant's defence was weak.
