Man escapes death twice, killed by suspected al-shabaab members

14 April 2014, 19:17 John Kioko

Kwale - A 65-year-old man who narrowly escaped death, twice, from suspected al-shabaab members was shot before he died undergoing treatment at Msambweni Hospital.

According to Msambweni OCPD Joseph Omijah the deceased, Swaleh Mwakuyumba was shot twice in the stomach by an unknown number of gunmen at his Mbuani home in Ukunda, before they escaped.

His wife Halima Mwatsudzo was also shot in her right leg according to Omijah before they were both rushed to Msambweni referral hospital for treatment.

"The man died later while undergoing treatment but his wife is in good condition," said Omijah in his Diani office on Sunday.

He said that the gunmen raided the home of the deceased at around 12:30 am on Sunday and found him outside his house with his wife before opening fire before escaping.

He said that the motive of the assassination is not yet clear because the attackers did not steal anything from the victim.

Omijah said that they have launched investigations to establish who are behind the killing and unearth the truth behind the incident that has left locals in the area shocked.

"We don't know exactly what can have lead to the killing up to now but we suspect it is because of a case before court that the deceased was a witness," he added.

The case, which is scheduled to be heard tomorrow where the deceased was a witness involved suspected terror mastermind Seif Setu alias Budget who appeared in Kwale court recently in a different name as Omar Bakari.

Sources indicate that the deceased was killed by a gang which is believed to be close friends of al-shabaab suspect in police cell.

Initially Police had shown interest of charging Bakari with three counts: hurling two grenades one at Tandoori discotheque and the second one at patrolling police, with the third count of attempted murder, its only the latter that survived with the former two being dropped.

Bakari was however charged that on 17th October last year at Mbuwani village in Diani location of Kwale County, unlawfully attempted to cause the death of Swaleh Rashid Mwakuyumba his in-law.

Appearing before Principal magistrate Elizabeth Usui, the court was told that the suspect shot at the man on the left hand, right shoulder and the waist on the said date.

He is still in police cells but police sources believe that he might have been planned for the killing of the deceased who has escaped death twice by the same gunmen.

On February 2014 unknown number of gunmen attacked the deceased at Mwamwinda mosque that is said to be his with several bullets on his head but escaped unhurt.

The February incident occurred after his in-law currently in police cell and suspected al-shabaab member Omar Bakari alias budget shoot the deceased on his stomach when they differed.
