Nairobi - A man died and many others were injured after a stampede caused by falling tents in a rally held by Deputy President William Ruto in Kajiado Central constituency Monday.
The man was stamped to death after strong winds blew the tent he was sitting in off its feet and then crushed to death. Several others were injured.
The injured were ferried to the nearby Kajiado County Hospital for treatment.
According to reports on the ground, the incident caused the rally to be called off.
" There has been a tragic incident in Kajiado where a person has been killed following a stampede occasioned by falling tents brought down by strong winds," a member or Ruto's press office who did not want to speak because they are not authorised to speak officially told News24 on phone.
Ruto was in the constituency campaigning for Jubilee Alliance Party candidate Patrick Tutui ahead of the march 16 by election.
Tutui will face off Orange Democratic Movement ODM's Elijah Memusi Kanchori, the two of them being front runners for the election.
ODM offered its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
" Condolences to the family of a man who died today at JAP campaign rally
in Kajiado Central by DP Ruto. To the injured ones, quick recovery, " head of communications Philip Etale said.
