The body of a middle aged man who disappeared on Sunday night was retrieved on Wednesday morning from a dam owned by Kitale Farm Prison in Trans Nzoia county.
It is believed that George Wesonga Wasike, resident of Grassland location, committed suicide after efforts to stop his wife from engaging in adultery failed to bear fruits.
Confirming the incident, area chief Isaac Mtirithia said that on Sunday evening the man was seen buying meat at a butchery inside the prison camp in the company of his two friends whom he said are prison officers.
“His friends confirmed to us that Wesonga had bought meat saying that he was going home as the family was expecting him before 8 Pm. He took his bicycle and drove off promising to meet his friends the following day but he could not be traced again; his phone went unanswered then off,” explained Mtirithia.
His mother Fridah Nasambu said that she received reports on his death Monday morning from a neighbour.
“My neighbor told me that he had found a bicycle resembling that of my son near the dam, and when I went to check I confirmed that it was the one my son was riding that day he went missing,” she narrated.
Nasambu reiterated that she noticed a strange object in the dam shortly after and through the help of local divers, was able to confirm that it was Wesonga's body beefoore it was retrieved and taken to Kitale district Mortuary for post mortem.
A day before the incident, the body of a fourteen year old boy who is believed to have been in company of several other young boys who were swimming at the dam was found by a woman who was washing clothes.
According to area residents, more than two people commit suicide by drowning themselves in the dam every year.
Mtirithia noted that many bodies of people committing suicide have been retrieved in the past years with the most recent one being that of a prison warden who killed himself after a confrontation with a friend.
Through the area chief, the villagers want the prison facility fenced saying that the dam has been a suicidal spot which has for a long time taken lives of their people and that the water from the dam is not benefiting them.
Kitale Police boss James Kimani said that they have launched investigations to ascertain the death of the deceased saying that he cannot rule out other possibilities which might have contributed to his death.
