Man burns himself to death

13 January 2014, 10:23 Oduor Omondi

Migori - A middle aged man at Nyantonyo village in Kuria West, Migori County, burnt himself to death over the weekend for fear of being beaten by the dreaded Sungusungu vigilante group after he battered his wife and chopped off her arm using a panga.

According to the deceased’s mother, Monica Morago Oyaro, the late John Nyang’ana took the action after his wife Boke Muhere, whom he had brutally beaten in a domestic scuffle, reported the matter to the group.

The mother said the Sungusungu group led by two youths, George Mikael and Murimi, entered into her son’s home forcing the scared man to lock himself in his house for fear of being beaten by the group. He then set the house on fire leading to his death.

According to the deceased’s daughter, her late father was accosted by the group that forced him to run for his life prompting him to lock himself in the house as the two Sungusungu men surrounded the burning house.

Local elders led by John Murimi Nyamohanga, who were holding a security meeting at the assistant chief’s office in Nyabohanse centre, said they got a call from one of the Sungusungu youths saying a man had locked himself into the house that was burning.

“We told the youth to mobilize others to save the man but later the caller said the man was already dead,” said Murimi.

Nominated County representative for Komosoko/Nyamosense ward, Richard Wambora, regretted the incident but called on the police to investigate circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

He said many innocent civilians have been killed on allegations that they are criminals and police should be keen to save life.

The body of the deceased is reserved at the Migori Level Four mortuary as police continue with investigations on the matter.
