A man who was caught with fake KES 1000 notes at a Nyahururu petrol station escapes death narrowly after he was beaten by a mob.
Police arrived and whisked the man away after receiving an alert from the petrol station attendant. He tried to escape but the public caught up with him and gave him a thorough beating.
Police had to disperse the crowd that was raining blows on the helpless man who was begging for mercy but in vain.
The man - was in the company of another man and a woman - had purchased fuel worth KES 2000 when he produced the two fake notes which were easily identified by the petrol attendant as counterfeit before raising the alarm.
After ransacking his vehicle, the crowd found an extra KES1000 note which was also counterfeit, forcing them to believe that the trio was on a mission to exchange false currency.
According to the area deputy OCPD Benjamin Onsongo the three had come from Kerugoya and Embu Counties but their destination was yet to be established.
The OCPD urged the area residents to be more vigilant since fake currency was on the increase in many parts of the country.
