Nyeri - A 76-year-old man was Wednesday arraigned in a Nyeri court on bigamy charges.
John Mwangi Mbuthia appeared before Resident Magistrate Catherine Mburu to answer to charges of entering into a customary marriage with another woman while still married to his first wife.
The court heard that on an unknown date in 1977 at Mweiga village, Nyeri County, Mwangi entered into a marital union with Anne Wangare Thumbi knowing that he was living with and legally married to Margaret Wairimu Mwangi
The prosecution alleged that the accused chased away the first wife after she failed to bear him a son; they were blessed with nine daughters.
The second wife however bore three sons and thus her husband neglected the first wife.
Mwangi and Wairimu were united in a church and did not divorce.
The father of 12 denied the accusations and was released on cash bail of KES 10 000 till January 13 next year when the case will proceed.
