Man, 72, arraigned on robbery with violence charges

Nyeri - A 72-year-old man accused of violently robbing two people of their household items was Thursday arraigned in a Nyeri court.
Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Wekesa, Silas Maina Macharia was charged that on March 25, 2014 alongside others not before court, he attacked the homes of Ricky Gakundi and Paul Koigi in Skuta area, Nyeri Town, and stole household items worth KES 233 000 and also threatened to kill the complainants if they failed to cooperate.
It is alleged that the gang was armed with weapons including axes and knives.
The charge sheet indicated that they broke into the house of Gakundi and ordered him to lie down as they carted away his gas cylinder, TV set among other items all valued at KES 63 000.
The court was further told that the accused stole other assorted household items valued at KES 170 000.
Maina was later arrested at Thunguma area by police officers who also recovered the stolen items at his house while his accomplices fled.
Maina however denied the charges and was released on bond of KES 500 000 with surety of similar amount.
The case is set to proceed on April 22, 2014.
