Nyeri - A 60-year-old man was on Monday arraigned in a Nyeri court facing charges of defilement.
Joseph Njuguna Gachara was charged that on September 29, at Embaringo village in Mweiga sub-County willingly and unlawfully had a sexual intercourse with an 8-year-old girl.
He was alternatively charged with having an indecent act with a minor knowingly and unlawfully.
He however denied both charges before Acting Senior Principal Magistrate, Christine Wekesa, and was released on a KES 300 000 bond and a surety of similar amount.
According to police reports, the minor had been sent to fetch water by her grandmother to a nearby river that day. On her way, she met her two relatives who persuaded her to first pay a visit to their grandfather to watch a television programme.
She told police that while they were watching TV, the accused, who is their immediate neighbour, joined them in her grandfather’s house. The accused then left after a shot time and requested her to escort him.
“Upon reaching his home, the accused took me to his bed and undressed me. I was feeling pain during the act but I could not scream,” indicated the report.
Her grandmother later went around the village looking for the minor but later learnt that she was in Gachara’s house.
After learning that the minor had been defiled, she took her to Embaringo dispensary for treatment on October 1.
She later reported the matter to Embaringo AP camp and the accused was arrested and escorted to Kiawara police station.
The case will proceed on November 13, with a mention on October 22.
