A man was Thursday morning lynched at Chepkoyo village in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, after being caught stealing a chicken and an egg.
An eye Witness said Evans Juma, 45, was arrested by villagers after breaking into his neighbour’s house at around 2am where he tied a chicken and put an egg into his pocket.
He said that after the neighbour noted that somebody was in his house, he raised alarm that prompted villagers to move into action; they surrounded the house before arresting the robber who pleaded for mercy saying that he was forced to steal because his family had gone without food for two consecutive days.
“He broke the door before entering into the house, but it was unfortunate for him as he was nabbed by angry villagers who were responding to the owner's distress call. They set him on fire after socking his clothes in petrol,” he narrated.
Confirming the incident, Kitale OCPD James Mitugo said that before the security personnel arrived at the scene, the villagers decided to lynch the suspect.
He urged the residents to desist from the act of lynching suspects terming it as 'committing injustice to suspects' whom he said have rights to be heard.
“We cannot continue lynching suspects. We have institutions mandated to handle such cases; let us stop this as within 20 days we have lynched 3 suspects. Mob justice is not cure,” he said.
The body of the deceased was removed to Kitale district hospital.
