Mama Lucy hospital on the spot after woman bleeds to death

26 January 2015, 10:30 Arap Yego

Nairobi - The management of a public hospital in Nairobi has been put on the spotlight following the death of a woman who allegedly gave birth and bled to death at the facility in an alleged case of medical negligence.

Lilian Obiero is said to have been rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital in Kayole on Friday where she safely delivered on Saturday morning, but bled to death after she was left unattended.

Speaking to journalists at his home, Michael Obiero, the deceased woman’s husband said he left his healthy wife at the hospital only to be told in the morning that she had passed on after giving birth.

“ I went to the hospital first thing in the morning, but I could not be allowed past the gate. I realised there was something fishy.  Shortly thereafter, I learnt that my wife had passed away,” said a teary Obiero, a casual labourer who threatened to sue the hospital for his wife’s untimely death.

Reporters who wanted to find out what had happened were barred from entering the hospital with guards directing them to the County director of health at City Hall.

Mama Lucy Hospital Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr Musa Mohammed later addressed journalists and absolved the hospital from blame saying post-mortem will be carried out to find out the cause of her death.
