MUHURI: Pronounce Tana clashes a national disaster
15 January 2013, 12:38
Muslim Human Rights group (MUHURI) lead demonstrations on the Mombasa streets calling for an end to the Tana River killings.
They demanded that the clashes be pronounced a national disaster and called upon the internal security minister to resign over his failure to curb the killings.
The organization called upon the government to look for an immediate solution to the inter clan warfare that police have linked to political forces.
The killings that have so far claimed more than 150 lives have been considered the worst ever experienced in the area and so far, the government has taken a poor reaction.
The members of the organization further called for the provision of any help in aid for the affected members of society who are in Tana-Delta.
More than 13 000 people have been evicted from their homes and are today dwelling in camps with a sense of unrest being felt in Tana Delta and its environs.
The organization was also against the MPs plan to increase their salaries in a single night.
They said that it was so unfortunate that the members of parliament were viewing their own interests and forgetting that other Kenyans also need to live with peace of mind.
The Mombasa District Commissioner, Alex Mureithi called upon the members of the organization to be calm as he tries to make sure that their pleas are heard and the necessary steps taken.
