MTV’s MAMA Award nominees announced

Nairobi - The MTV African Music Award (MAMA) has announced the nominees for different categories of awards for the 2014 show set to be held in the Kwazulu-Natal, sponsored by Absolut and the city of Durban. The awards are meant to appreciate talent in music shown by Africans within and outside of the continent and features some of the best in the music industry.
Kenya has featured in some of the categories for showing exceptional talent and skill. Sauti Sol was nominated under the category of Best Group, alongside Big Nuz (South Africa), Mafikizolo (South Africa), Mi Casa (South Africa) and P Square (Nigeria).
Amani featuring Radio and Weasel – ‘KibokoChangu’ was nominated under the “Best Collaboration”, alongside artists like Diamond feat Davido – ‘Number One’ (Remix) (Tanzania/Nigeria), Mafikizolo feat May D – ‘Happiness’ (South Africa/Nigeria), R2bees feat Wizkid – ‘Slow Down’ (Ghana/Nigeria) and Uhuru feat DJ Buckz, Oskido, Professor, Yuri Da Cunha – ‘Y-tjukutja’ (South Africa/Angola).
Lupita Nyong'o was nominated in a non-music category as one of the “Personalities of the Year” with the likes of Chimamanda Adiche (Nigeria), Omotola Jalade Ekeinde (Nigeria), Trevor Noah (South Africa) and Yaya Toure (Cote d’Ivoire).
Though Kenyans were nominated for a few awards, I can’t help but feel that the music industry can do a whole lot better than this. Compared to the Nigerians, with a whopping 26 nominations and the South Africans with over 40, our performance is dismal, with a mere 3, one of whom isn’t even a musical personality. Changes need to be effected as early as possible to make this more of a competition next year.
