MPs lock horns with security agents

11 March 2014, 16:54 Robert Kibet

Nakuru - A faction of MPs in Nakuru County have raised concerns over escalating cases of crime whereby bodies of persons have been found brutally murdered and dumped in various parts of the county.

Led by Njoro MP Joseph Kiuna, the political leaders said security was paramount and cannot be compromised.

Kiuna pointed accusing fingers at the security wing saying the county commissioner needs to explain to Kenyans what was happening.

His Naivasha counterpart, John Kahiga pointed out that a day rarely passes in his constituency without a case of murder being reported.

“We urge the police to up their games and fight the menace that has wrecked havoc among residents of Nakuru County,” said Kahiga.

Late last year, a gang of robbers armed with crude weapons raided a petrol station in Naivasha leaving five attendants dead.

On his part, Nakuru County Commissioner Mohammed Birik dismissed the claims of rising cases of murder saying the incidences have reduced by a big margin.

“Politicians are fond of recklessly speaking on issues touching on security regardless of efforts being made to curb insecurity in Nakuru. We need to be honest with each other,” said Birik.

While singling out one incident in which a man was found murdered and body dumped, Birik said that police have already arrested two suspects.

“Recently, we also killed thugs at Sachang’wan along the Nakuru - Eldoret highway and recovered an AK47 and 100 rounds of ammunition,” he said.

Birik further hinted that main determinants of crime in Nakuru are highway carjacking, communal conflicts and kidnapping.
