MP protests against mishandling of natives in Boni forest operation

25 September 2015, 09:19 Ken Wekesa

Lamu - Lamu East MP, Athman Shariff has castigated security personnel for mishandling the local residents during the ongoing operation at Boni forest.

Sharrif said the security officers have failed to put into consideration the interest of the natives who largely depend on the forest for survival.

He said the residents will be disconnected from the essential services saying there is no proper coordination and relocation of families from the forest saying the Boni community who depend on the forest for honey have no other source of livelihood.

It is alleged that the fate of 2 000 families from Basuba Ward within Boni Forest remain unknown following the military operation that was launched last week to flush out Al Shabaab militias from the forest even after the Interior and Coordination CS promised to facilitate them with relief and residence during the operation.

The MP however says leaders in the area have not been involved in the operation, and called on the government to consider the needs of all who will be involved in the operation.

The operation was launched two weeks ago and is expected to last for three months where the government intends to comb up the forest that has been used by Al Shabaab as their hide out due to the thick covering and bushes that extend into Somalia.
