MP admits ownership of Mombasa metal refinery company

30 April 2015, 18:27 Zainabu Dena

Mombasa - Nyali MP, Hezron Awiti Bolo has admitted that he is the owner of the go-down turned lead factory in Changamwe’s  Owino Uhuru area.

He has however said that he leased out the property to Kenya Metal refinery (EPZ) on a long term basis.

The legislator, who spoke today in Nyali, also termed the expose’ aired by KTN’s Jicho Pevu programme as malicious and one-sided.

He further opined that the expose’ may have political undertones.

“The claims that I am behind the woes of Owino Uhuru residents are baseless and malicious, and it is the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) that should be held accountable for the lead poisoning incident that has affected many mothers and children within the area,” Awiti said.

“The lease agreement, signed in 2007 allowed the Kenya Metal refinery to lease the property for five years,” Awiti stated, adding that as the landlord of the property in question, he was not involved in the day-to-day operations of the company.

He also stated that he was not aware of the sinister activities of the company owners, whose lease hold he revealed he revoked three years ago following media reports that the lead factory had put in peril the lives of those living near it.

“I have donated at least half an acre to the  squatters living in Owino Uhuru area, and it goes against logic that I would allow any entity to kill my people willfully through slow poisoning,” the Nyali MP said.

Awiti asked the media to be fair in their coverage of issues afflicting Kenyans.
