MCA's and MP's urged to stop touring certain foreign countries

27 October 2014, 22:56

Kwale - Cabinet secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Amina Mohammed warned that foreign country frequently visit be leaders can make Kenya to be blacklisted.

She was speaking at Leisure Lodge resort in Kwale County three days workshop on foreign travel and fiscal responsibility for both national and county governments. "Most foreign countries have raised their concerns that Kenyan MCAs and MPs tour their states frequently without being given time to plan for them,"she said.

Most countries want to be given time to plan for ay group of MPs or MCAs visiting them if another group had already toured their country instead of checking immediately.

"Host country must be given a 90 days notice that a group of MCAs or MPs will be touring through her ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kenya. If there is any group from the County or National assembly attending seminars, workshops or conferences in any country it should pass through the ministry of Foreign Affairs,” she noted.

Amina made it clear that the Ministry of Foreign affairs is not a devolved sector unlike the way other governors thought.

She was accompanied by Principal Secretary ministry of Devolution and Planning Mwanamaka Mabruki who said it is important for both national and county government to reach consensus on foreign travel.

“As leaders of various levels you have one reason or another to travel abroad for diverse reasons and cannot remain closed in your cocoons as there are international engagements to be made,” said Mabruki.

She also urged leaders to be conscious of the uncontested facts that resources are scarce and should be utilized to serve the people they represent.
