Nakuru - Molo Ward representative, Ngugi Muigai has said he will be tabling a motion seeking to ban the use of Genetically Modified food in the county.
Muigai said that most diseases are mainly caused by GMOs and that once the motion is adopted by the house, the rate of chronic diseases will go down.
“I will bring a motion to the floor of the house that will ban the use of GMOs in the county because they are known to have a negative outcome when consumed by human beings,” he said.
Speaking to the media in Nakuru Tuesday, Muigai said that the GMOs have continued to be a health hazard to the public over the years.
He said that most of the GMO plants are also the main cause of soil infertility in most of the farms in the county.
“Most of our farms are unproductive because of plants which are genetically modified,” he asserted.
Citing the Mathenge plant in Baringo County, Muigai said that there is need to conserve and protect Nakuru County's environment by cultivating plants which are not genetically modified.
He urged the Nakuru government to create awareness in the county against GMOs.
Muigai also said that the new motion will seek to ban the importation of GMO food in the county.
