MCA lashes out at govt for sidelining youth

16 December 2013, 14:14 Wilshere

Nakuru - Nakuru Nominated Member of County Assembly, Margaret Kiiru, has said that the procurement department has sidelined the youth while awarding tenders.

The nominated MCA also said the procurement office failed to carry an advertisement in the newspapers on the same as outlined by the Constitution.

“We are not happy because our procurement officers are claiming that tenders have already been issued yet youths were not included,” she said.

Speaking on Monday morning during a press briefing, Kiiru said that the youths are also County residents and that they should not be sidelined in any job opportunities.

The nominated MCA called on Governor Kinuthia Mbugua to intervene on the matter and fire the head of procurement department.

“It is not fair that other people are being given tenders yet our youths are being left to languish in poverty and that is why the governor has to fire the officer in charge of procurement, said Kiiru.

She said the youths were not notified on when to apply for the tenders saying there is a curtail working in the office of procurement to swindle the public out of money.

At the same time the MCA said that the tendering and preservation scheme will be receiving KES 1.5 billion from the County budget which will be used to help youths to set up business.

She said the funds will only help youth groups which are registered and recognized by the County government.
