Nairobi - The vice-chairman of the National Council of Elders, Riaga Ogalo, is dead, his family has announced.
Ogalo, who is also a former chairman of the Council,
died Wednesday night while undergoing treatment over Kidney complications at the Kenyatta National
Hospital in Nairobi.
" He had Kidney complications and unfortunately could not make it through," Philemon Riaga, his son and family spokesman told News24.
Ogalo had been admitted at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for the last two weeks but on failing to improve, was transferred to Kenyatta, Riaga added.
CORD leader Raila Odinga was among the first dignitaries to send his message of condolences to the family of the deceased.
" Our thoughts go out to the family of the late Mzee Ogalo at this time of mourning," he stated.
Ogalo served as chair the Luo Council until 2010, when he moved to the lesser position of the vice chairman.
The council is a key player in Nyanza politics and has in the past been behind decisions made by Luo Nyanza in as far as the political and social landscape is concerned.
