Vihiga - Leaders and professionals from the Luhya community in Nakuru County condemned the recent attack on Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula in Nairobi and called for thorough investigations.
Members of the County Assembly from Nakuru who represented the professionals from the community - Wesusi Pala'nga, Dan Ambale and Jackson Wandera - said Monday that the circumstances surrounding Thursday night's shooting should be made clear by the authorities.
“We do not want to speculate but the security personnel should explain to Kenyans why such a prominent leader in the opposition should be attacked," they said in separate statements.
They further called on the police not to sweep the matter under the carpet saying the attempts to kill the leader were serious.
Wetang’ula, who was recently re-elected as Bungoma Senator in the December by-election, escaped unhurt during the 11.00pm attack.
Wandera said that Wetang’ula's political star was on the rise and that he should be protected.
“This is a matter that should be taken seriously because Wetang’ula represents the second largest community in the country,” he said.
He further warned that any harm on him was likely to cause tension in the country.
He added that the Senator was the current spokesman of the Luhya community who should be supported by fellow Luhya leaders.
He said the community in the County will host a homecoming party for him to celebrate his recent victory.
