Nairobi - Strathmore University in Nairobi is among four institutions that will supply electricity to the national grid, it has been announced.
The University together with three other groups Thursday each signed 20 year deals to supply energy to the grid.
The other are Kwale Sugar Company, Ndunyat Sacco and Mt Kenya Women's Community Organization.
They will supply a total of 28 megawatts to the grid.
" This agreement will boost the national power grid and also open the way for other smaller power providers to come on board and contribute," Kenya Power CEO Ben Chumo said in Nairobi.
Kwale will produce the power from Kenya's Coast, Strathmore here in Nairobi, Mt Kenya from Meru and Ndunyat from Kajiado County.
Chumo said that the added power will help boost the country's power reserves.
" The reliance on hydro power must be reduced and the emergence of these new ways will help ease the reliance," he added.
The 4 will create added power using solar, biomass and wind projects.
