'Unite to eliminate poverty'

24 May 2013, 11:30 Alloys Musyoka

Leaders in Kilifi County have been urged to unite for a common goal of finding ways to eliminate poverty in the area by creating job opportunities for youths.

Kaloleni MP Gunga Chea said that the issue of poverty in the area has caused the region to lag behind in development for decades.

He said elected leaders can unite to come up with methods to tackle poverty amongst locals in the larger Kilifi County.

“We have to sit down as leaders and come up with a permanent solution to the issue of poverty in this area," he noted.

He said when they unite, they will be able to come up with ways of improving lives of their people who have elected them and thus eliminate poverty.

Chea was addressing the media in Malindi where he said the County has a lot of resources which if well used can see the County develop like others.

“We have a lot of resources in this region like coconut, cashew nuts, tourism and fishing industry among other resources which we can put to use and help develop this County. In fact, we are richer than any other County,” he added.

The MP challenged youths and women groups in the area to work hard and ensure they wisely use grants they get from government so as to uplift their living standards.

“The era of sitting down and wait for relief food is gone. We have the County government with us, let us use our resources to develop our region," he said.
