Land Reclamation for sustainable agriculture in Mombasa
17 February 2012, 12:33
Areas around Likoni area are ASALs (Arid and Semi Arid Lands).
Agriculture is not possible here as the area receives very little rainfall in a year.
In addition, the soil there is sandy and rocky; but this has not stopped Patel a Kenyan of Asian origin who has been able to run his horticultural agriculture round the year without fear of the produce lacking water.
Patel has a bore a hole under earth where water can be drawn using an electric powered pump to the surface.
The water is able to supply over ten hectares of now reclaimed agricultural land.
Food security and employment
When I interviewed him he said he plants amaranthus (mchicha) in large quantity, pawpaw, Cassava, pepper, cucumber among other traditional vegetables.
Patel says, the produce supplies the surrounding markets of Kongowea, Kinango, Marikiti and Ukunda. He also has employed over 20 workers; both women and men doing farm chores.
So far the biggest challenges he faces are pests control, cost of electricity and human intruders on his property.
Such a project is worth being adapted by the Kenyan government through the ministry of Agriculture, other agencies and individuals, so as to be able to develop other arid and semi arid regions in Kenya which cannot support agriculture.
This will help curb problems of hunger thus releaving us from the problem we had when the Kenyan for Kenya initiative and such like programs had to lend a helping hand.
The cash from the same can be used to buy farming inputs and sink more bore holes and install the water pumps.
