Nyahururu - Laikipia University has been closed indefinitely following a demonstration that left several students dead.
The University’s chancellor, Prof. Francio Lelo, ordered the institution closed indefinitely, even as tension continued to rise as many students reside outside the institution.
One student was allegedly shot dead by a stray police bullet during a demonstration as he tried to set ablaze a car belonging to a traffic police officer that had overrun another student at the same University.
Confirming the incident, Nyandarua North police boss, Benjamin Onsongo, said that the student died in the shootout as police tried to disperse the students who were protesting the accident.
On Monday morning, students said that the body of a female student was found in the University’s wheat farm, and it is believed she might have bled to death due to bullet injuries while another is being treated at the University’s health centre.
The traffic police officer is expected to appear in court to answer to charges of careless driving.
The bodies were removed to the Nyahururu district hospital mortuary.
