Kisumu police refute claims of re-emergence of street gangs

Kisumu - Police in Kisumu have dismissed claims that two of the outlawed militia groupings in the city were regrouping for a fresh offensive.
Kisumu Deputy Police Chief, Joe Lekuta, refuted the claims and assured residents that security agencies will decisively deal with the gangs in the event they resurfaced to ensure that peace and tranquility the city enjoyed is maintained.
He insisted that the two militias; the American Marines and the China Squad were disbanded and arrested members arraigned in court for various offenses during a crackdown on outlawed groups.
However, traders in the town said the gangs were dormant during the security mop up but have reinvented their operations and have reportedly been terrorising and extorting money from members of the public at night.
Last year the two gangs fought supremacy battles in the city streets in a war that spilled over to nearby estates before security agencies intervened.
The two groups emerged during the run up to the 2013 general election and were used for political expediency before they locked horns over their respective territorial boundaries in the lakeside city.
