Nyeri - A matatu driver died Thursday evening while three passengers were critically injured following a road accident along Nyeri-Nanyuki road near Kingo’ng’o prison.
The accident occurred after the vehicle which had 12 passengers onboard veered off the road and rolled several times after one of the rear tyres burst thereby losing control.
The driver died on the spot while the three passengers were rushed to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital for treatment.
Area OCPD, John Leshimpiro said police officers who arrived at the scene of the accident had ascertained that there were 12 passengers onboard.
He said all the passengers had been rushed to the hospital for treatment while the three who were seriously injured were admitted at the intensive care unit ward.
Leshimpiro said according to initial investigations, the accident occurred due to a tyre burst.
He however said investigations were still ongoing to establish whether the driver over speeding.
According to commuters, they heard a tyre burst but when the driver tried to stop the vehicle it instead rolled several times.
“Owing to the vehicle’s imbalance after the burst, the vehicle slanted and overturned on the tarmac road hurting the driver and some passengers badly,” said an eyewitness.
