Kinango road accident leaves three dead, scores injured

07 October 2013, 12:00 John Kioko

Kwale - Three passengers died on the spot while scores of others sustained injuries Monday morning in an accident along Mazeras - Gandini road at Mguneni area in Kinango, Kwale, when the mini-bus they were traveling in veered off the road and overturned.

According to Kinango Red Cross project coordinator, Ibrahim Munga, the Kyondo mwita mini-bus, registration number KBT 957T, was heading to Mombasa from Kinango via Mazeras road when the accident occurred.

Munga further said that one of the seven passengers who seriously injured has been referred to Aga khan hospital in Mombasa from Mariakani health center where they were rushed after the accident.

He said the other passengers who sustained minor injuries were rushed to Kinango district hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

"After the accident, our officers rushed there and started rescuing passengers who had been stuck in the bus and rushed them to nearby health centers for treatment," said Munga.

One of the deceased, the Red Cross official said, is a staff of the bus company saying the PSV was overloaded and over speeding at the time of the incident, thus causing the driver to lose control of the bus.

“The passenger vehicle involved in the road accident has a capacity of 50 but had 70 passengers when the accident occurred,” he confirmed.

Our effort to reach Kinago OCPD, Silus Ringera, were futile since his phone was off at the time of going to press but sources said that police are looking for the driver of the bus who escaped after the incident.
