Kimaiyo sacks Mbugua as KAA boss

Nairobi - Kenya Airports Authority CEO Lucy Mbugua has been sacked over abuse of office.
Mbugua was sacked Saturday after an extraordinary Committee set up to probe the leasing of 5 buses at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for KES 11 million a month found her guilty of flouting procurement laws and in effect defrauding the company of millions of shillings.
General Manager Finance John Thumbi and the acting airport Engineer Christopher Warutere were also fired over the airport bus scam.
The Board at the same time lifted the interdiction of Legal Counsel Victor Arika pending further investigations, stating that evidence so far suggested that he had offered advice against the opulent deal.
Procurement Manager Lilian Okidi and Head of Examination Martin Kamau were however cleared by the Committee, thus released and will report back to duty as normal.
KAA Chairman David Kimaiyo said this was part of the authority’s update of the ongoing investigations into the Passenger Transfer Services tender (Apron Bus Services) at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, JKIA stating that the action was necessary to rid the Authority of a bad name.
The move comes a few weeks after President Uhuru Kenyatta questioned the deal and asked that action be taken on the matter.
He insisted that he could lease the KAA buses from the National Youth Service NYS for KES 300,000 a month.
The decision is thus the end of the road for Mbugua who has been flirting with suspension during her time at the Authority having only in March been cleared over yet another scandalous deal.
