'Killer' Kimilili club owner finally arrested

08 September 2014, 23:39 Arap Yego

Bungoma - The owner of an entertainment joint who allegedly shot dead a university student a week ago at his business premise after a bar brawl and fled, has been arrested.

The suspect, who owns a famous club in town, was arrested on Sunday afternoon in Kisumu town, according to Bungoma County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed.

Mitch Kibiti, the 22-year-old Technical University of Kenya student who was shot dead by the businessman, was laid to rest on Saturday.

The slain student is the son of Bungoma County Chief Executive Officer in-charge of Education, David Kibiti.

“We have the suspect in custody and will be arraigned at the High Court after investigations are completed. We pledged to apprehend and bring him to book, and we are happy we finally have him behind bars,” said Mohamed.

The arrest of the businessman who was on the run comes two day after the county leaders led by Governor Ken Lusaka and Kimilili MP Suleiman Murunga faulted security agencies for failing to arrest the suspect.

The two leaders who were speaking during the funeral service of the slain student at Kimilili DEB Primary School they were puzzled that the authorities had not caught up with the businessman, a week after the tragedy.

Lusaka  had threatened to lead the area residents in a demonstration today if the culprit, who is a licensed gun holder, will not have been brought to book.

“I will join hands and lead residents in protests if justice does not prevail,” warned Lusaka.
