Nairobi - Kenyan gospel music comes in very may varieties, flavors shapes and sizes, from gospel hip hop form the likes of Juliani and Eko Dydda, to local pop gospel from Jimmy Gait and Size 8 to the hundreds of church choirs from across the country. It however does not stop there with a not so common new entry into the gospel scene from a band called Kanyeki with their genre “Kenyan Gospel Vernacular Hard Rock”.
For the average religious person, it might sound like a bit of a handful, but in their latest track, released on you tube on March 7, 2014 titled “NdingihotaGutariria ” they seem to have pulled it off.
The song is done in Kikuyu is one to listen to with its well performed instrumentals and vocals, and a decent video to match. It is inspired by the book of Job Chapter 38. I an interview with its lead singer and composer Kanyeki he said:
”I wrote the song when I was in a bad place in life, having recently lost my parents and during that time, I started asking questions of God”. The title which in English stands for “I will not question” says it all, and though it might not be the average person’s cup of coffee due to its “Hard Rock” nature, it drives the message home, even for people who do not speak the language in which it is sang.
