Kidero denies move to ban Gor,AFC from Nairobi

24 August 2015, 16:39 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has denied claims he has intentions to ban Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards from playing in the city, saying it would be detrimental to Kenyan football.

There has been uproar from Kenyans over the behaviour of the Gor and Leopards hooligans that caused chaos Sunday during and after the derby clash between the two sides at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Kidero's communications officer Walter Mong'are had earlier stated that there was a chance the match would be banned from the city but Kidero himself feels that the utterances are premature.

" I understand that there is a lot of anger from Kenyans over this matter but the main issue is how to deal with hooliganism and I believe that the issue starts at club level, ten we can go higher," he told News24 Monday.

" There is damage but these are clubs that have been Kenya's pride over the years and we cannot just kick them out."

" Their fans bases are also largely in the city so it will have to be a decision made at a very high level after consultations are made," he added.

Nairobi County communications director Walter Mong'are had earlier said that the County will consider not holding the matches in the city to stop the violence and wanton destruction of property during the matches.

" We have written to the clubs and league managers to have the two clubs play outside the County because we cannot be doing this all the time," he told News24 Monday.

" We cannot simply afford the time and money to be cleaning up their mess. Every-time there is a match we count destruction and this is simply unacceptable," he added.

The Kenyan Premier League mashemeji derby clash between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards was abandoned, then called off due to crowd trouble at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Sunday.

Trouble started when Referee Rafael Nduati awarded Gor a penalty in the 65th minute after Leopards captain Jackson Saleh handled the ball in the box in his attempt to clear an Abouba Sibomana cross from the left.

Meddie Kagere stepped up to take the spot kick for Gor, but Leopards fans started throwing objects onto the pitch forcing the players and officials to scamper for safety.

Police efforts to calm matters proved futile and after 30 minutes Match Commissioner Paul Kaunda from Kisumu County decided to call off the match citing security concerns  after consulting with his referees.

The abandonment was a sad end to what had been an entertaining match, and will surely see Leopards punished for the mess, as it was their fans that started the melee.
