Kibaki to upgrade Mombasa Poly

25 January 2013, 16:43 Rodgers Buluma

Mombasa Polytechnic University College is expected to graduate from being a university college to a fully fledged university on Thursday, 30, 2013.

The institution, that is among the long lived higher education institutions in the country, will be offered the charter by his Excellency President Kibaki.

The institution was started in 1947 by earlier Islam teachers with an intention of teaching Islamic youths handwork among them being carpentry, crafts work and pottery.

It was later upgraded to a polytechnic by his Excellence the retired President Moi and it extended its services beyond the Islam population to all Kenyans without regard to religious background.

In 2000, Mombasa polytechnic graduated to a University College and from then hence forth, it has been a major educational institution in the coast region.

For all this time, Mombasa Polytechnic University College has been working as a constituent college of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Meanwhile, the President is expected to sum up his development forums in Mombasa by officially opening the first industrial court in coast province.

The industrial court will be located at Bima Towers along Digo road in Mombasa is expected to lift the load of industrial cases from Nairobi and at the same time reduce the costs involved in solving industrial cases.

This is a special development forum for the coastal people and to the President himself ahead of his retirement.
