31 October 2015, 16:05 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale was in the eye of the storm as members of the public nearly lynched him after his driver run over a woman along Burnt Forest Road, killing her instantly

The incident took place Saturday morning as the Senator was heading to Kitale for a political rally.

His driver run over the woman who was crossing the road near Kondoo junction.

Irate members of the public who witnessed the incident were quickly at the scene and threatened to burn the CORD leader's vehicle but Police who were nearby intervened.

Khalwale later claimed that the woman walked onto the road too quickly for his driver to react and avoid hitting her.

" There was nothing my driver could do. The woman walked onto the road at a stage where he could not avoid hitting her," he told News24 on phone.

The driver was arrested by police and Khalwale's vehicle, a Toyota VX detained by police.

" I will cooperate with the Police  but I can assure you it was an accident that  we could only have avoided if the woman did not walk onto the road considering the speed we were moving at," he added.
