Kenya's internal security at risk

21 December 2012, 14:57

Going to war against the Al Shabaab was the most courageous act since Mau Mau uprising against the colonial government. As a country, we saw the need to invade Somalia and quash the youth militants because a lot was at stake. They had tampered with our economic activity; tourism, by abducting and killing tourists. This was beyond a pinch to the Kenyan government.

With the incursion into Somalia, every Kenyan was boasting of how we have a military personnel and equipment that is hardly matched around the region. This is true to the letter but we have fallen back on our security levels and therefore our incursion into Somalia is not really meeting its full objective.

Not met our security target

The reason why we walked into the horn of Africa with our military might and started treading on all Al Shabaab quarters is because we felt our security had been breached to an extent that was beyond threshold.

However with a year and some months in Somalia, we have achieved zero in terms of restoring security within our borders. We might have hit the bulls eye in terms of securing Somalia, providing a platform for restoration of a government and driving Al Shabaab from towns and various hideouts but we are yet to achieve the objective number one. It isn’t the military’s job to secure the people of Kenya internally and therefore the blame doesn’t rest with them instead they get a standing ovation for the bravery and courage displayed in the land of the enemy.

Internal security

Matters of internal security are the work of the police and intelligence officers within the government. These two bodies have been on a slow move when it comes to intercepting security threats and thus we have lost a number of lives ever since our first boot landed in Somalia. This is a tragedy because they seem to be occurring almost every week now and more lives are at risk. Obviously with the kind of situation in the country right now, tourists will shy away yet they were the reason we walked into Somalia.

We need to tighten our security apparatus and keep vigil on a 24 hour basis because we cannot be wining in Somalia and loosing at home. As the army carries out its millions of operations, the intelligence officers across the country should be on high alert and ensure that security in every corner is uptight. There is no room for loss of lives through grenade attacks; this is because it is very simple to keep high alert security. If the security officers in the country secure the border lines and other entry points and the spies or intelligence officers or those involved in covert affairs infiltrate terror gangs and networks then there is no room for explosives to be hurled every now and then.
