The overwhelming turn up of youths in the recent army recruitment
exercise indicates that Kenya is very much willing to defend its country
against the Al Shabaab militia in Somalia, a Senior recruitment officer
Lieutenant Colonel Lazarus Wafula has said.
During the exercise
in Nanyuki Municipal stadium, over 250 males and more than 30 females
turned up for recruitment into the armed forces.
Speaking to
press at the stadium during the exercise, Col Wafula said that the
excitement amongst the youths has motivated the Kenyan soldiers fighting
the Al Shabaab militia group in Somalia.
“There are no cases of
corruption and canvassing reported in the three districts of Laikipia
County where recruitment has taken place so far. We are subjecting these
candidates to examination and thorough scrutiny to ensure only those
qualified are the ones recruited”, said the Kenya navy soldier.
He further continued that the ongoing recruitment exercise is for the Kenya Army, Kenya Navy and Kenya Air force soldiers.
“There
is a general mood of excitement and initially we thought people would
not come out. In Rumuruti area, we were overwhelmed” Said the senior
recruitment officer.
In Laikipia West district where the exercise
was conducted on Tuesday, six recruits were picked while four were
picked from Nyahururu district.
The team heads to Doldol Township
in Laikipia North district today before proceeding to Sirma center in
Laikipia Central district tomorrow.
By the time of going to the
press, the exercise was not over with the officer not willing to
disclose the number of recruits to be taken.
