Kenyan stranded in Uganda after being defiled by 'sponsor'

08 December 2014, 16:00 Godfrey Olukya

Kampala - A 15-year-old Kenyan girl is stranded in Uganda after being defiled by a man who took her from her parents with a promise that he would sponsor her education in Uganda.

Shaline Cherop claims that she is a former student of Stamani School in Kitale. Kenya.

''I was brought to Uganda by a man called Michael Wanyera. He promised to educate me,'' she said.

She said that when she arrived at Wanyera's home in Mbale, he made her his wife.

''Instead of taking me to school, he turned me into his wife. He started forcing me into sex everyday,'' Cherop narrates.

After spending two months in Mbale, Wanyera relocated with the girl to Wandago village in Mayuge district, 100kms east of Mbale where they lived for seven months.

Police arrested him over allegations that he had been on the run after being implicated in a murder case.

Mayuge district police commander, Caroline Akoth said, ''Wanyera has been on the run over charges of murder. When we arrested him, we found him with the underage Kenyan girl whom he had turned into a wife.''

Akoth said that Wanyera is now facing an additional charge of defilement. In Uganda it is criminal for an adult to get involved in sex with a girl below 18 years of age.

The girl is now being kept at Mayuge police station as efforts to reach her parents are being made.
