Kenyan men love weaves and make up, they just can't admit it
09 September 2014, 19:00
Nairobi - As much as Kenyan men
go around saying that they love the natural you with no make-up, that is a
complete lie. I know that for a fact because I personally experience it every
day. I know I'm not a bad looking lady and I take care of myself. But at times I
just leave the house without make up and I'm still attractive.
But one thing I have
noticed is the hair thing, when I have some long braids or hair extensions, the
attention is just a tad bit too much. Exchange it with the afro, you are just
another female across the street. When
they are glued to the screen ogling at Lillian Muli and the like, she
definitely has make up on and a weave. We should do a nationwide test and have all
presenters go on-screen without all that, then we will see how many people will
still be interested in current affairs.

What I think is that, makeup and weaves are good but... the
lady needs to know what works and what does not. Because not all women are
blessed with long, flawless natural hair, so they have to work with what they
have. The part where most women get it wrong is:
1. Having one that smells and is dirty. As a woman that
disgusts me too, maintenance is key. If you know you want something that lasts
for a month, use braids, they are better and even they, have a time limit.
Weaves and extensions have a very short time limit, do not have same one for
three months. You would rather even remove it and look ugly for a month until
you can afford another one.
2. Grease. I do not know how that happens but I am sure when
it comes out of the pack it never is that greasy.
3. Do not look trashy. Some women put funny colors on their
head and weird styles. On that note have a good stylist. What puts off people is
when you see a woman with an Eiffel tower on her head like she is trying to
take you to France. The key to good hair extensions is if you need to put one, make sure it is natural looking. You do not see those anchors with red and
gold, or even purple. I am all for royalty but seriously, it takes a certain
kind of person to pull it off.

Same applies for make-up. Do not overdo it until you end up
looking plastic. It is meant to cover up blemishes or uneven skin tone, not put
an extra layer of skin. That is how you end up with cake looking layer on your
face. Same applies for colour, less is more needs to be applied in this area. Do
not be an art masterpiece. Because the worst that can happen is at night when
you remove it and you look like someone else. That is what men do not like as they get a sense of flitting reality because they are not sure what you will
look like once it is removed. They do not want at the end of the day to be
sleeping with someone they did not pick up. Make up should not give you a whole
new identity but enhance what you already have.
So if you have your afro and you like it, then keep it and
enjoy it. But if you are unsatisfied and need that boost of confidence from
wearing the weave, by all means do it, but let it have a natural look. Look
classy and sexy. Because I am sure some lady somewhere is wondering why her man
is staring at the girl in the corner with the weave and make up yet he is
preaching natural. Men say all manner of confusing things, you just have to be
woman enough to know what it is you want, what you can accept and what works
for you. Then do you.
