Kenya selects team for Cape Town

Sixteen athletes have been selected to represent the country in the forthcoming African Cross Country Championships to be held in Cape Town South Africa on March 18th 2012. The athletes were selected after the National Cross Country trials at the Uhuru gardens in Nairobi.

In the Junior women category, 2011 World Champion Faith Kipyegon did not have a hard time as she won her race ahead of Agnes Jebet who came second Kipyegon won last year’s 6km race in Penta Umbria Spain.

Kipyegon clocked 19:50 in the six Kilometre race, finishing ahead of Jebet who clocked 19:57. Alice Arpot was third (20:00) while Nancy Chepkemoi finished off 4th to earn the last ticket to Cape Town in a time of 20:06.

In the 8km Junior race, 3,000M World Youth and Commonwealth Champion William Malel Sitonik was crowned the National Champion in his second attempt of racing in cross country. He beat a tough field with Justine Cheruiyot coming second clocking 23:12:1. Cornelius Kangogo was third finishing in 23:20:00. Japheth Korir managed to squeeze in 4th in a time of 23:20:6 to earn the last qualification spot.

In the Senior Women 8km race, Joyce Chepkirui, took full advantage of the absence of World Champion Vivian Cheruiyot and compatriot Linet Masai to win the race in a time of 26:08:8. Margaret Wangari came in a close second ion a time of 26:09:4. Edna Kiplagat managed to finish third timing 26:12:8 with Emily Chebet claiming the last qualification spot in 26:17:3.

The men’s race was the most entertaining an thrilling with heavy weight Mathew Kisorio being beaten fair and square and missing out on a qualification spot.

Japan based 22 Year old Bernard Karoki won the race after beating off stiff competition from Timothy Kiptoo and Vincent Kiprop. Karoki who has been training in Japan for the last five years cut the tape in a time of 35;19;2 after sprinting off from Kiptoo in the last 50 metres. Kiptoo came in second in a time of 35;25;00.

However, Karoki will not be participating in the African Championships saying that he will be preparing for the FUKUOKA marathon.

The Men Senior team will have Timothy Kiptoo- 35:25:00, Vincent Kiprop- 35:37:00, Fredrick Musyoki- 35:41:3 and William Chebon- 35:49:00
