Kenya Police receives toll-free phones

24 January 2013, 16:10 Mwangi Karanja

Security in Trans Nzoia county has received a major boost after Airtel  in collaboration with Khetia's group of companies donated ten toll - free mobile phones to Kitale police station.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Airtel western region operational manager Anthony Opiyo said that wananchi will be able to call any police station in the county for free  adding that it will help curb crime during and after general election.

Opiyo noted that the county had passed through many insecurity incidents and it was vital for other business communities to come in support of community policing which he said will help security agents beef up security.

“When a person calls this line, it will be free no charges. We hope that people will be reporting insecurity matters as soon as they happen because every person needs peace to operate,” Opiyo said.

He added,''This program will cost all who have partnered today KES 0.5 million and we hope that soon we will expand to other regions so as to equip our police officers with gadgets that will ease communication between the force and the wananchi."

His sentiments were echoed by the Khetia’s group of companies General manager Ashok  Khetia who said what was witnessed during the recent election must no repeat itself and all people must unite and help the police do their work by providing crucial information that will help with arrest of those who are causing insecurity.

He reiterated that soon they will supply more than fifty mobile phones, to the police in addition to those donated today, that will be distributed to police posts across the county.

Applauding the donors' good will, Kitale OCPD Kimani Mitugo urged other stakeholders to support the police force as it prepares for general elections.

Mitugo added that they have already laid an operational plan that will help the force beef up  security in the county urging the members of public to provide information regarding  security attheir areas of residence saying that it will be kept confidential.

At the event, fifty airtel toll - free lines were also donated.
