Kariuki to fly ODM flag in Mathare by election

Nairobi - The Orange Democratic Party (ODM) has settled on Steven Kariuki as the party’s flag bearer in the coming Mathare Parliamentary by election.
A statement from the party said the decision was reached in a meeting that was held at a hotel in Nairobi.
“This was as a result of separate caucuses by party members of the National Assembly, Members of the County Assembly, and Branch and Sub-Branches officials in the last one week which settled on Mr. Kariuki as the party’s flag-bearer,” read part of the statement.
According to the statement, parties affiliated to the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) have decided that that will not nominate their candidates for the election.
“Consequently, we have received assurances from the CORD coalition partners that they will not be fielding candidates for the seat,” part of the statement read.
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero was picked chairman of the 12 member campaign steering committee which was set up during the meeting.
Yesterday, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) confirmed that it had received the certificate nullifying the election of George Wanjohi as the Mathare MP.
“The Commission has subsequently written to the Speaker of the National Assembly requesting that the seat be declared vacant,” IEBC said in a statement, adding that the election will be conducted out within 90 days as required by the law.
