A Kenya Wildlife Service warden was on Thursday killed by a stray hippo in Nyahururu as he was leaving his office.
Confirming the incident, Nyandarua North police boss Benjamin Onsongo said that the officer was recently transferred to Nyahururu station just a few weeks ago and was not totally conversant with the area.
He added that the officer, who was armed, died on the spot after the animal bit him and ripped off his belly.
When his fellow officers went to his rescue, he was already dead.
The hippo disappeared into a swamp along the Ewaso Nyiro river.
Cases of hippo attacks are frequent in the area.
The OCPD urged residents to be careful and avoid running late because that is the prime time that the mammals get out to fetch food.
