KWS officers kill jumbo in self defense

24 July 2013, 14:04 John Kioko

Fourteen Kenya Wildlife Officers escaped death narrowly when a rogue elephant charged at them as they tried to drive it away from a village in Msambweni on Sunday.

The elephant was among three others said to have been involved in the killing a granny aged 83 years at Fingirika village in Msambweni over the weekend.

The KWS officers, drawn from Msambweni and Shimba Hills Game Park, had gone to drive away the rogue wild animals which were causing tension amongst locals.

Msambweni KWS warden Nathan Gatundu said the officers were trying to drive away the animals when one of them charged at them.

He said they managed to escape after shooting at the animal which was trying to attack them severally.

“There were three elephants and officers were driving them out of Fingirika where they had killed a elderly woman who was going to her rice farm, then one of the animals which is believed to be the one that killed the woman turned against the officers then they shot it in self defense," he said.

Gatundu said that the wild animal later succumbed to injuries but the remaining two were safely returned to Shimba Hills game park.

He said it was not their will to kill the elephant but since they were defending themselves, they had no other option.

Residents of Fingirika, Mivumoni, Mwachande, Mafisinii and Kikoneni were delighted by the news of free elephant meat and flocked the area to get a share.

The officers has however urged locals to inform them about any wandering wild animals in the area so that they can be traced and returned to the forest before they kill villagers again.
