Nairobi - Kenya ports Authority will create over 25,000 job opportunities once the new container terminal and the Lamu berths are completed by 2015,KPA chairman Danson Mungatana has said.
He said the terminal which is due to be completed in November 2015 at the Kilindini port will create about 1000 jobs while the three Lamu berths will employ 1,500 youths urging them to specialize on marine courses and acquire special skills to grab the opportunities.
“The completion of a new container terminal at the port of Mombasa and the three berths of the proposed Lamu port will create hundreds of job opportunities,” said the KPA chairman.
This comes as majority of the youth in the coastal region remain jobless yet the port of Mombasa has employed over 7000 workers.Mungatana maintained that Mombasa port will serve all coastal people without any discrimination or favour.
Mungatana, who was speaking at the KPA headquarters where Coast Parliamentary Group Chairman Gideon Mung’aro (Kilifi North) and his Kilifi South counterpart Mustafa Iddi had paid a courtesy call, appeal to youth to upgrade their skills because only qualified people will be hired.
“These are direct jobs, and we expect massive employment once the projects are complete. We appeal to youth to upgrade their skills because only qualified people will be hired,” he said.
