Kenyans take to twitter after JKIA fire

07 August 2013, 13:02 Maureene Danielle

Nairobi - The early morning fire that engulfed Kenya’s main international airport left citizens and the world at large shocked and with lots to say.

All local stations went on the alert and ‘Breaking News’ was the title for all electronic media as journalists struggled to keep their audience abreast with the lates news about the going ons at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Citizen journalists took to Twitter where many had lots to say. Those on the scene were able to report to the world with their news by tweeting photos of the fire and following rescue operations and even when the President, Uhuru Kenyatta and other officials rushed to the scene to access the damage, the Twitteratti were able to upload photos, and comments with the hashtag #JKIAFire.

There were those who expressed their devastation to the news of the fire:

Ahmed Jazbhay @AhmedJazbhay
By the looks and sounds of things, Kenya might not have their busiest airport functioning after this fire is done #JKIAFire #

RT @muriithiw: #KE has survived bomb blasts, terrorist attacks and the brink of civil war. Even this shall pass. #Pray4KE #JKIAfire

Thank God indeed "@nicolemakau: so much in it wen u keenly think bout it,very controversial.. bt am glad no one lost their lives #JKIAFire"

Even the government departments were quick to use twitter to keep the nation and the rest of the world posted. We had the disaster operations, ministry of interior, immigration department and even the director of immigration with handles.

@InteriorKE Good to hear, you're doing a great job keeping people updated - great to see social media being used for this purpose. #JKIAFire

Disaster OpCentre KE @NDOCKenya
RT @InteriorKE Follow @JaneWaikenda and @ImmigrationDept for updates concerning immigration at Msa and Eld airports. #JKIAFire

UPDATE: Fire is now under control. Thumbs up to the brave first response teams on site. No casualties.  cc @NDOCKenya @KenyaRedCross

Of course some Kenyans on Twitter or as they are notoriously known as KOT decided to take to humour and speculations as a coping mechanism maybe? Or their usual razzle whenever something newsworthy occurs.

An intelligent investigator would rule out terror attack already! A terrorist would achieve 'more' up in the air than at arrival.#JKIAFire

#JKIAFire was caused by either terrorism, Accident (Which i highly doubt), Pattni's revenge for his duty free shops. But am not police

Local TVs Opinion Poll Tonight:  "Do you support the decision by fire to burn down JKIA?" #jkiafire

Tez Lore @tezira
So, has the Commission of Inquiry into the #JKIAfire been constituted yet? "I wish to assure Kenyans that no stone will be left unturned.."

The media were not spared from the roasts as they all jostled to be heard and to be the first with the highest ratings as the story developed.

Lulu Akaki @misslullita
Kenyan journos rely on twitter for news.why are y'all so shocked they can't handle live reporting about the #JKIAFire?
On a somber note many Kenyans can’t help but remember that fifteen years ago on this same day, there was a bomb blast at the then US embassy building by terrorists in Kenya that took many lives and left many injured some baring some of those wounds today.

crème de la crème @Mcmark_G
Mayne! August is just being itself. #jkiafire

Jimon @jimonakeyo
#jkiafire cannot just be a fire according to the #bbc relating it to terrorism though that coincidence for 08/08 is uncanny

Wanjeri @mawazo_mengi

Today is August 7th. Fifteen years ago the "Breaking News" was much more tragic. Let's be grateful for no loss of lives here. #JKIAFire

As of now the cause of the blaze has not been established but it is clear that we are still unable to cope with national disasters promptly. But you can be assured that social media has made the relay of information faster and created new age journalists.
