KNUT have their way as TSC agrees to promotions
08 January 2014, 18:31
Nairobi - The Kenya National Union of Teachers KNUT has agreed in principle with the Teachers Service Commision TSC on promotion of teachers.
KNUT had promised to go on strike if the promotions, which were set to take effect on 1 January 2014 were not effected by the TSC.
TSC on its part had stated that there were no funds for promotion of teachers and had said that higher qualifications were not a pre-requisite for promotion.
But in a meeting Wednesday the two agreed to start the process of promoting deserving teachers with a committee set to be formed to over see the matter.
" We have agreed to sit down and look at the exact number of teachers who deserve promotion and they will earn their rightful places, TSC Secretary Gabriel Lengoiboni said.
On his part, KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion said that he was glad the government was willing to keep their part of the earlier agreed bargain.
" We are happy that the TSC has sat down with us and come up with an amicable agreement on this matter, he said.
Sosion says it is the right of teachers who have furthered their studies to get a pay increase and promotion.
He disclosed that KNUT wrote to TSC during the
56th Knut Annual delegates’ conference that was held in Nakuru late 2013 over the matter and was thankful they were civil about it.
