Nairobi - Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has set-up a Paediatric Neuro Emergency Theatre (PNET) at the Accident and Emergency Centre to conduct neuro paediatric surgeries.
A statement from KNH said the specialized theatre had been set up to cater for the increasing number of babies born with hydrocephalus and tumours and need paediatrics neuro surgeries.
“While in full operation, a total of six surgeries will be carried out in a day,” read part of the statement.
Dr. Samuel Njiru, a neuro surgeon behind the idea to set up the facility was motivated due to the suffering of neuro patients especially the children.
KNH said the facility’s first patient underwent an operation in May 2014 with remarkable success and by 30th June 2014 over twenty children had received the life saving surgery.
The specialized theatre is also served by the Emergency Ward which also acts as a recovery ward before a patient is transferred to the ward.
