Embu - A 100-year-old granny has entered the country’s book of records as the oldest person to be jailed in a Kenyan correctional facility.
Margret Ngima is currently serving a three months jail term at a prison in Embu after a High Court judge found her guilty of contempt of court together with her two sons aged 72 and 52.
She is jailed at Embu Prison because her sons failed to raise the KES 100, 000 fine imposed on her by Lady Justice Florence Muchemi for disobeying a court order directing her and her sons to allocate land to one Justa Wawira who has since 1997 been demanding a share of the family land.
Wawira’s father who is not related to the family had rented part of the land and is said to have claimed a share of the land located at Nthambo in Embu County before his death.

The granny who never went to school and can neither read nor write says she dutifully observed all the court directives and was shocked to be sent to the gallows.
She walks in the prison with the aid of a walking stick and relies on the goodwill of other inmates to clean her clothes and keep her comfortable at the prison.
The prison deputy officer in charge Sarah Mulatia said the granny is in a state of misery and loneliness.
