KEBS not renewing expired alcohol licenses

05 August 2014, 19:55 Wilshere

Nakuru - Assistant Director of Kenya Bureau of Standards in the county Peter Ndisi, has said that alcohol manufacturers operating with expired licenses risk spending one in prison if arrested.

Ndisi added that KEBS is currently not renewing any expired license until the directive issued by the government requiring all alcohol manufacturing to qualified technical personnel, certified laboratory and a Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC) Machine.

“Our laws are very clear that no alcohol manufacturer should operate without a valid license and anyone who will be arrested will have to pay a fine of KES 1million or spend one in year in prison,” he said.

Speaking on Sunday during an interdepartmental operation involving KEBs, NACADA, Police and public health officers, Ndisi said that the new measures being put in place will help curb cases of illegal alcohol being manufactured in estates.

He added that during the operation they were able to arrest one alcohol manufacture who was operating with an expired licenses which is against the government laws.

According to Nakuru Assistant County Commissioner Purity Cheruiyot who was also in the operation, she said that the inspection will go for four days in order to inspect over 200 applications.

She warned rogue manufacturer against risking members of public lives by operating without the licenses and required documents failure to which the law will catch up with them.

“We have inspected Advanced Ltd which manufactures Poond Spirit and we have immediately closed it and arrested the owner for flouting the law while Biscepts Ltd which has maintained highest standard in cleanliness and following the law.” Cheruiyot said.
